| Finding the right agent can be a little frustrating! |
I read the advice contained in the 2014 Guide to Literary Agents and then read it again, and again.
It's a great resource. While it didn't answer everything, it did help me focus on what I should be looking for and how to find it.
As a new author, I don't have any experience with agents. I don't know how to tell a good agent from a bad one, let alone how to grab a great agent's attention.
The Guide was really a big help. There are tips from many different agents about how to format a query letter. There are also suggestions to help you figure out if the agent you are querying is even interested in the type of novel you have written.
Since I have written a romance novel (like millions of other people) I don't want to waste my energy querying an agent who specializes in SciFi or non-fiction. I need to find an agent who champions romance.
This process has been more complicated than I had imagined it would be. There are spreadsheets and FBI level research involved. OK, so maybe that is a bit of an exaggeration, but there is a lot of research involved.
Here's hoping it is all worth it in the end!
